From Venue to Glass: What Bartenders Handle at LA Events

A bartender at an LA event does far more than pour. The shift runs from load in through setup, ice, service, restocking and last call to breakdown, and all of it happens inside the hours you book. The minimum booking is 4 hours per staff member at $70 an hour for a bartender, so the shortest shift is 4 x $70 = $280 plus a $100 service charge.
Load in and setup
Staff arrive with their own bar tools: shakers, strainers, jiggers, openers. If you have rented a bar, the 5ft white wood bar comes with 4 ice tubs and a trash can, and delivery and pick up are included in the $1,195. Setup is placement and build: bar in position, back bar behind it if you have one at $365, linen on, bottles arranged so the common pours are within reach.
Where this sits in your billable window is worth settling when you book. Give the time you want the first drink poured and the time you want the bar closed, and the window is written on the quote around those points.
Ice, prep and the first pour
Ice is the thing most self-run bars underestimate. On a full bar or craft cocktail package, ice, mixers, sodas, garnishes and plastic cups are supplied and the bartender builds the station before doors. On a bartender only booking you supply the spirits, mixers, ice and glassware.
Prep is citrus cut, garnishes trayed, syrups and batches ready. A craft cocktail bar at $25 per guest light, $50 medium, $75 heavy includes three cocktails built for the event, and those three get prepped in volume so the queue moves.
Service and restocking
One bartender per 50 guests is the staffing guideline, with a second recommended at medium consumption, 3 to 4 drinks per guest, or heavy, 6 or more. Behind the pouring, someone is restocking: hauling ice, clearing empties, running bottles from the back stock, keeping the rail dry. A barback at $70 an hour exists to do exactly this so the bartender never leaves the bar.
Bartenders are RBS certified and watch consumption as they go, which includes checking identification and declining service where required. California alcohol rules vary by venue and by whether alcohol is sold, so confirm what applies to your event with California ABC or your venue.
Last call and breakdown
Last call comes before the end of the booked window, not at it, because the bar has to close and come apart inside those hours. Breakdown is the bar area: bottles boxed, tubs drained, stations wiped, bar trash bagged, rented items stacked for collection. What Platinum brought leaves with Platinum. Rented bars and back bars are collected, and anything you supplied on a bartender only booking stays with you.
Common questions
Does setup time count toward my 4 hours?
Your booked window is what is billed, and it is agreed on the quote. Give the service times you want and book the hours around them.
Do I need a barback or can one bartender do everything?
One bartender can run a small light consumption event alone. At 100 guests or medium consumption, a barback at $70 an hour keeps the line moving because ice and restock stop pulling the bartender away.
Who cleans up the glassware?
Glassware is a rental at $1.95 per unit and is collected, with delivery and pick up at $195 each way. Plastic cups come with the full bar and craft cocktail packages.
