How Long Do Water Balloons Last?

Fill water balloons on the day you plan to use them, ideally within an hour or two. Latex is thin and porous, so a filled balloon starts seeping almost immediately and usually goes soft within a few hours. Left overnight, most leak, sag or burst. Unfilled balloons are the opposite and keep for a long time if you store them cool, dark and dry.

Filled balloons: hours, not days

Water pushes constantly against a thin latex wall, and the knot is the weakest point on it. In shade you may get a few hours before they feel soft. In direct sun on hot concrete the wall warms, the latex weakens and they start going on their own.

Plan around that rather than fighting it. Fill in batches close to the moment you need them, keep the batches out of the sun, and accept that whatever is left at the end of the afternoon is finished. Filling the night before to save time on the day is the one thing that reliably does not work.

Where you keep them matters as much as when you filled them

• Shade, always. A tub under a tree or a table beats anywhere in the open.
• A cooler or a plastic tub rather than a bucket in the sun. Cold water also slows the softening.
• Off hot surfaces. Concrete and decking hold heat and will cook the bottom layer.
• Do not stack them deep. The weight on the balloons underneath splits them early.

Self-sealing balloons that fill in bunches are quick, and the seal is the part that goes first. If you are using those, fill them last.

Unfilled balloons keep for a long time

Latex ages with heat, light and time. Unopened bags kept in a cupboard rather than a hot garage or a car will be fine for a long stretch. What ruins them is a summer in a shed. If a balloon feels sticky, chalky or stiff before you fill it, the latex has gone and it will split at the tap.

Clean up the pieces

Burst water balloons leave small latex fragments across a lawn or a pool deck. They are easy to miss and are a hazard to dogs and wildlife, so walk the area afterwards and pick them up. Around a pool, get them out of the water and off the surround before anyone walks it barefoot. Some venues and parks have their own rules about balloons on site, so check before you plan a game around them.

Can I fill water balloons the night before?

It is the most common plan and it rarely survives to the morning. Expect leaks, soft balloons and a wet floor. Fill on the day instead, and if you need volume, fill in batches with more hands rather than more time.

How long do they last once they are outside in the sun?

Less than in shade, and on a hot LA afternoon noticeably less. Keep the filled ones covered and shaded until the moment they get used.

Do water balloons work for an adult party?
