Bartender Etiquette and Professionalism at Los Angeles Parties

Expect your bartender to arrive ahead of guest time in uniform, set the bar, work the shift, use judgement on alcohol service, and hand the bar back to you clean at the end. In return, staff need a clear call time, a defined bar location, access to ice and water, and a break on a long shift. Bartenders are $70 per hour with a 4 hour minimum.
What a host can expect from the staff
- Arrival and setup. Staff arrive before guest time to build the bar, cut garnishes, ice down beer and wine and lay out glassware, with their own bar tools.
- Uniform. All black unless you asked for something else. Requests such as black tie or tattoos covered are taken at booking, not on the night.
- Service judgement. Every bartender is RBS certified. If a guest is over the line, the bartender slows service, offers water, and tells the host quietly rather than arguing at the bar.
- Bar area upkeep. Bar top wiped, empties cleared, spills handled, garnish trays kept in order all night.
- End of night handover. Bar broken down, leftover alcohol accounted for and left where you want it, rented items packed for pick up, rubbish bagged.
All staff are W-2 employees of Platinum Bartenders LLC, covered by general liability, liquor liability and workers' compensation insurance, so the standard is set by the company.
What staff need from the host
- A call time and a timeline. Setup happens inside the booked hours, so say what time you want guests served, not just what time staff should arrive.
- A bar location, decided. Moving a built bar mid-party costs you service. If there is no bar on site, a bar rental is $1,195 and includes a 5ft white wood bar, 4 ice tubs, a trash can, delivery and pick up.
- Ice, water and a sink. Somewhere to store ice, and running water within reach of the bar.
- Breaks on a long shift. Past four or five hours, staff need a short break away from the bar. With one bartender that means a quiet stretch. With two, they cover each other. This is one of the better reasons to book a second bartender or a barback at $70 per hour, which you can price at book.platinumbartender.com.
Tipping
Tipping is at the host's discretion. It is not built into the rate, and the $100 service charge per staff member is a booking charge, not a gratuity. Some hosts add a tip at the end of the night, some put a tip jar out for guests, and some ask for no tip jar at all. Say which you want before the event, since it changes how the bar is set up. Catering is the exception: gratuity is already included in catering packages.
Common questions
Do the booked hours include setup and breakdown?
Setup and breakdown sit inside the booked hours, so book from when you want the bar ready to when you want it closed. The minimum is 4 hours on all staff.
Should I tip the bartender?
It is up to you and it is not included in the rate. A tip jar for guests is common, and so is the host handling it privately at the end. Gratuity is already included in catering packages.
Can I ask staff to stay longer on the night?
Ask the bartender on the night. Extra time is billed at the same hourly rate, and nothing is promised, since staff may have another commitment.
